Les Beletsky is a professional bird biologist and natural history expert. Having worked in a library for many years, this is a heavy book with poor binding. I hope the recipient of this gift enjoys it but I doubt if it will hold up to much handling. Too bad since there are a lot of birds to listen to. Also, if you are listening to a bird on page 200, you have to tap the counter to that number to hear the bird. Kind of regret this order for the price, condition and operation.
First let me say my children (3,5 & 11) LOVE this book!The 3yr will mimick sounds for 30+ minutes at time. The 5yr has increased her math skills tremendously by just clicking up and down the range of audio numbers and can now easily count to 250!The audio is excellent - and our ears are definitely more in tune to hearing birds around us now. At breakfast the kids are yelling out that a cardinal, robin and blue jay are somewhere in the trees outside.Adults will be frustrated though - you cannot just key in the audio # you want to hear. You continually have to scroll up and down the 250 audio clips. The index is only written for the page # of each bird (not the audio #) - AND only one specific name is listed for each. (someone here already mentioned the Chickadee will only be found under "Black Capped Chickadee") - So I had to take the entire list and create an index by audio # for the kids and using multiple names where necessary. We just taped it into the front cover. It would have been better if the first bird appeared on page 15 - to have that bird be audio #15 as well - instead of audio #8 can be found on page 14. Just a bit frustrating.All in all I am very glad we have this book for our kids though!
The book was in good condition, but it played the same song for every page. It is supposed to play the song of each bird as the pages are turned. I was very disappointed, would like to return it. There are bird books galore, but this one was supposed to play each one's song. I was going to give it as a gift to a mentally challenged person who would really have enjoyed it. Would like to return it.
There were great reviews on this when we bought it for our daughter for Christmas. The first one, the device that makes the sounds didn't work. We tried replacing the batteries and of course we read the directions. The replacement that just came unfortunately has the same issues. Clearly this product has some poor quality control as the 2 most recent reviews at this time are having the same issue. We will be returning this device and not wasting any more of our time with it.
Numerous bird calls didn't work but the kids like it. I'm probably pickier than most people because as an avid birdwatcher I like more in depth info. Probably great for a backyard family reference or a novice birder.
This is the best book for the price you can get to introduce yourself or others of all ages to the pleasure of Birding . The pictures are well drawn and large full page renderings . The bird calls are charming as I would never hear most of them myself . This is an amazing collection for the number and the variety . I have seen no other book like it . Your average bird book tells you the sound but unless you are all ready conversant in bird songs you don't really know know how to auditable the sound . But this book you click to the number press play and listen to the short song . Yes that's a lot of songs to click to get the one you want but I just start with page one and am having a great time working my way through this book . So five stars for price , pictures and just fun . Your kids will love it if they like birds or maybe this book will encourage them to search the birds out in your area .
I agree with the review written by Daniel Casall: "So much potential. so poorly realized." I love the idea of the book and being able to listen to different bird songs. However, accessing them, to quote his review, is a royal pain.Sadly, however, what brings me to this site now after having this book for perhaps five years is that the song player has died. I got the book out this morning to try to identify an unusual bird song outside my city window. it played one song, then stopped, seemingly forever. I'm half inclined to replace it, but even the bargain price is no bargain.I'm not chirping.
I purchased this book, brand new, almost 6 years ago from Amazon.com for about $25 with free shipping. It was supposed to have been a Christmas gift but it took 6 months to receive, so I kept it for myself. I remember being upset that it took so long but now I understand. This is a great book. Well made and so much fun for the whole family. I live in FL and this book has all the birds I have seen and heard. Easy to use and mine still works great and in almost perfect condition. I could see how the price went up so much in 6 years but if you can't afford this price, keep searching for a gently used affordable copy. It's worth it.
