Andrew Vonnegut teaches global economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, advises on economics and finance, and owns a small manufacturing company. I work in finance and, increasingly, the companies I work with are globally connected. A private equity partner I work with recommended this book as a way to get up to speed on how the global economy works. I found it really useful, not at all dry and rigid like I remember economics when I was getting my MBA. You may want to pick and choose chapters. I found the chapters on comparative economies, participants, trade and investment really interesting and useful. Others might more appreciate the chapter on central banking and quantitative easing’s effect on the global economy.Overall, highly recommend.
The book had a practical orientation and many historical examples and short case studies. It gave a good overview of who is who in the global economy and their incentives, the pro and cons of freer trade under different circumstances, central banking and capital flows, and had an interesting section on financial contagion with different ways it can happen. I only give it 4 stars because I would have liked to see more economic theory and models. The author seemed a little dismissive of that body of work, or at least did not seem to think it was very important for people to know about. It is definitely more oriented towards people working in business and investment fields rather than economists.
The book was a refreshing course of international economics, elaborated nicely with contemporary emphasis of events across the globe. The book helped me a lot to move beyond the dry principles of economics in my course, with sharp focus on political economy although in many places it does not refer to these by name, but calling upon institutional arrangements in international economy clearly relates to political economy. Finally, about the money and macroeconomic context (global macroeconomic context), not only it elaborates eloquently principles of financial economy, but it does so in an informative way, such that it illustrates actual the role of financial centers and how money is created and how the choices of options to finance economic activities impact decision making, and economic growth. I would recommend this book for students and researchers interested into first hand experience how global economy functions.
This is an excellent book for students as well anyone interested in how the global economy really works, written by someone with a depth of experience. The book offers keen insights based on years of professional experience, hard data and careful, fact-based analysis. In the introduction, the author explains that his motivation for writing the book came when he started teaching his course on International Economics at UCSB and couldn't find the right book. Well, he has written THE book!
One of my investors knows the author and recommended that I look at the book before jumping too hard into global stock markets. It has been useful. My thoughts:Pros: very pragmatic and non-theoretical way of looking at the global economy; looks at global economic problems from a lot of different perspectives, not just from one school of thought; many good examples of actual events and commentary on them, very useful; well researched and documented.Cons: covers a lot of topics in a book that is not that long, maybe should have left out some chapters.
This is an excellent book for anyone that has an interest in international economics and how things work in the real world versus pure economic theory. Vonnegut explains with humor, humility and great insight how trade between nations and individuals works. The font is a touch small but that is my only complaint. Great read especially in these times of trade wars and economic turmoil in so many industries.
This is a super interesting economics and finance book! Case studies and examples are up to date and helpful in explaining our increasingly interconnected world. The author did a nice job covering the intersections of economics, policy, business, finance and human/consumer/investor behavior.
I was given this book. I work for a corporation that employs 350000 employees. If every one of them read this, we’d make more money. Kudos to the author. I’d love to meet him. He swaps academic posturing for real life experience.
