From the Inside Flap
While on vacation, Raymond incessantly checked the carpets of Disney World looking for poison he had seen spilled there--in his mind.... Sherry was terrified of her thoughts about stabbing her baby daughter.... Jeff couldn't silence a mental voice urging him to have sex with men and animals.... Howard Hughes had it. So did historical figures Martin Luther and Ignatius of Loyola. They all suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)--as do over five million Americans who need to know that there is now hope and help. Ian Osborn, M.D., a specialist in OCD and a sufferer himself, has written the first comprehensive book on the experience, diagnosis, and treatment of OCD. He reveals recent discoveries about the disease as a biological disorder--a physical, not a psychological abnormality--and the exciting new therapies that have dramatically changed the future for OCD sufferers. His wise, compassionate book includes: Pencil-and-paper tests for self-diagnosis Six steps to conquering OCD Medication that works Early signs that show OCD in children Guidelines for family members A comprehensive listing of where to find organizations and support groups--and more

This is a MUST read for anyone suffering/dealing with OCD. If you have OCD (like myself) I was apprehensive to read it because I was nervous it might not touch on the symptoms I was experiencing. Not only did it "touch on my symptoms" but it was a mirror image of what I was going through. It has brought clarity to my current life situation and honestly reflects who I am from early childhood to present. When I started reading this book I read for four hours straight. It has been the BIGGEST step forward in helping me to recover from the worst of my OCD symptoms. I still have much progress to make, but feel better about living with OCD and accepting it. In some strange way it makes me feel proud to be who I am. As much as I don't want my OCD symptoms, I am an individual with this type of brain and getting to know myself better has been quite a journey.
When I received my OCD diagnosis I wanted to read as much as possible, but I wanted a book that was more in the scientific camp and less geared toward self help, which is great but I was on a research mission. The author here goes through very interesting case studies and it never gets too in the weeds that a layman can’t follow. On a personal level I found it very validating to be exposed to so much information and stories from others with the condition.
This book helped so very much in guiding me through understanding what OCD is. Which, in turn, has helped my son as we read through it, as he is the one who suffers from OCD. It is full of information and clarifies the nature of intrusive thoughts and the resulting compulsions. And the fact that OCD is a physiological disorder was eye-opening. Truly a must-read for anyone with OCD or close to someone who suffers.
This is a well written book on how people with OCD struggle daily. By reading this book I found that I had a few ODC tendencies myself. A good read if you or anyone you know or think may have OCD it also has a few suggestions to help.
This is a PHENOMENAL book. It has real-life stories, good information... I am SO GLAD I bought it. It was super inexpensive, too. I bought it used, and it is in perfect condition. Not one crease on a page, not one pencil mark, no rips or bends, etc. This book is written in a way that would interest people either with or without a mental illness. And it doesn't assume you already know about OCD. I HIGHLYYYYY recommend this book to ANYONE! I would have bought it for $25. It's really interesting AND educational (not in a boring way).
This is an excellent book written by someone who knows it inside and out - a sufferer himself. It is filled with practical steps an OCD sufferer can take on his or her own. It also contains numerous case studies written by sufferers who share their obsessions and the resulting compulsive behaviors. It includes how they put to use the steps provided and though they say "it was not easy" it was well worth the effort and helped them "get their life back". This is a must read for OCD sufferers AND their families. In addition to providing ways for the sufferer to improve the quality of his or her life, it helps the family members better understand the disease. This knowledge gives them the ability to be encouraging while at the same time to be more compassionate.
If you or someone you know suffers from OCD, then you need to read this book. Not only does Dr. Osborne cover all the basics of the disease, but he does it with a disarming style. I was comfortable while reading this book, even though it covered very uncomfortable subjects. The fact that the author has struggled with bouts of OCD helps the reader feel at ease, knowing this person understands from experience. The individual case studies were extremely enlightening to the various manifestations of OCD. This is a vast field to cover, but Osborne makes the links for us. I suggest reading this book and following it up with his more recent book on OCD "Can Christianity Cure Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?". Great books!
Best book for OCD on the market.
