What I like:Fun stories, easy to read for beginners, the side-by-side presentation is very useful.What I really dislike:Translations are not EXACT in several places. This is super frustrating. For example:Here's a Spanish version of the text:"Despidiéndose por última vez de Guanina con un beso ardiente, Don Cristóbal y sus compañeros de armas se pusieron en camino."In this book, this sentence is translated into English as the following:"Kissing Guanina goodbye, Don Cristobal and his companions set out."The above translation is incomplete. Here's the CORRECT translation that SHOULD HAVE BEEN in the book instead:"Saying goodbye to Guanina for the last time with a fiery kiss, Don Cristóbal and his comrades in arms set off."In my view, this type of translation is counter-productive to learning, because the learner cannot correlate the translations to figure out which word means what. If all translations were exact, I would give this book 5/5.
This is a really great book for students of Spanish. I would recommend at least one year of Spanish study first. I am in my second year of Spanish and I was looking for a book that was appropriate for my level and had interesting stories as well. Because it is a side-by-side book I am not spending all my time looking up unknown words in the dictionary, trying to figure out the meaning of the story. I read what I can in Spanish and then glance at the English to make sure I've understood the reading. I am also able to see how the grammar I am studying in class is used in writing. I can see uses of the imperfect tense vs the preterite, subjunctive and other grammar studied in class. The stories are also great at building vocabulary and being able to read them makes me feel that I am definitely making progress in learning the language. This book is great supplemental reading for a class or even if you are teaching yourself Spanish. You are also learning about the history and culture of Puerto Rico.
I've been studying Spanish independently since a trip to Puerto Rico last winter. It's been fun to read this book from time to time and see how my comprehension is getting better and I have to check the English less and less often.
Excellent for a U.S. person who would like to learn both Spanish language and about the Spanish roots of the country. The English text is presented side-by-side with the Spanish. I enjoyed the the black and white illustrations and think they will help when I read these stories to my bi-lingual grandchildren a couple of years from now.
This book is great for those wanting to learn Spanish! You will also learn much about Puerto Rico. I recommend the whole series of books.
This is actually a really cute book. I bought it before I moved to Puerto Rico, and even though the stories are geared towards kids, I actually learned a lot about the culture and history of PR.
Excellent book
I really liked the book especially the stories. They were short and sweet. The translation is excellent. I would recommend.
