I enjoyed this book mostly because it was deeper than so many books out there today. The author writes with intelligence and beautiful word and sentence usage. I loved learning about such a fascinating country as Turkey in a time of complete change and turnover of history. My only trouble with this book was the numerous characters to try to remember and keep in order of who they are in relation to the others. Because the names are not typical (in English) it is often difficult to understand at first if the person is even male or female. That frustrated me at first, but I hung in there and was ever so glad I did as it was a book worth reading!
The biographical novel of the author’s family, constructed through the tales of different relatives over several decades. Richly descriptive in aspects of culture and history, and the sequel to “Farewell: A Mansion In Occupied Istanbulâ€, the novel contains many more characters than the first. Either due to the translation, or simply, the stories of the lives and events of many characters, the novel failed to connect as sensitively as did the previous, or as did “The Last Train To Istanbulâ€. Further, in previous novels, the author allowed the characters to relay the story whereas in “Love in Exile,†the author overwhelmingly relayed the story.
This book gave me an insight into information about Turkey that I didn't already know. Set mainly in the 1920s, a time of change for Turkey. Ayse throughly researches her books, so you know the information she gives is for real. I found it fascinating both from the real aspect and the love interest . I am always sorry when her books end, I want them to go on and on, but all good things must come to an end, and I finish with giving this book my heartiest recommendation. To you readers - read and enjoy and look for more of her books. The Last Train was also one I didn't want to put down.
This book gives an intriguing look into the author's extended family and the changing face of Turkey. Starting with the fall of the Ottoman Empire and moving through the modernization of the Turkish Republic. The family has a Bosnian branch, Armenian Branch and the Great Grandfather who was Chancellor of the Exchequer for the last grand vizier. The historic changes and how they were met by this resilient family are enlightening and engaging. Ms Kulin's writing always moves the story at fast pace. The Turkish and Bosnian names are a bit demanding, but well worth the effort!
Enjoyed the book immensely . Such an amazing insight into the constantly transitioning culture of Turkey and the tremendous adjustments of the members of a loving family. It was sometimes difficult to keep track of the character and their relationships within the two families. All the characters were so interesting and we'll developed. I have learned so much about the history of Turkey and it's culture. Wonderful book.
Many books can be read quickly and when "The End" comes, nothing seems to have mattered enough to be remembered.This book taught me about generations of families who loved each other and cared for each other and most of all respected each other. Love was cherished and tradition was followed happily. Turkey evolved as the years passed and traditions changed the love within the families became stronger as the world around them changed.I enjoyed this book and from the beginning. I felt that the book was sharing life stories with me and were written with love for each individual who comprised this family.Thank you for sharing Ayse Kulin. The most beautiful and loved baby her father had ever seen.
I read "Love in Exile" which was an interesting book and I know it was a family's history. However, I found it a bit difficult to follow the many family members. I have read several books that were family histories of that period of time and places including Alyse Kulin's "Last Train to Istanbul" that I found very interesting and informative. However, I didn't feel quite the same about "Love in Exile". I think I expected it to be a book about Jewish life in that area during that period of time. I would recommend it, however. Judith Cohen
I chose this rating because I couldn't put the book down until the end & was ready to read it again. Having lived in Izmir and Istanbul off and on for nearly forty years, I was reminded of the people, the customs, the familiar places. It was as if I were living with the characters as a member of the family.
