Stuart Symington, Jr., is the former chairman of the Missouri Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and a former trustee of the Association of the United States Army. The book contains a lot of good information about Missouri Civil War sites, but I recommend that you buy a map along with the book. Unbelievably, there is no overall map of the state included in the book and you have to flip and flip and flip to find the partial maps that are spread throughout the book. There is no list of battles. The other problem is that the index is quite poor. For example, one of the most significant battles in the state was Wilson's Creek, which does not appear in the index at all.
I enjoyed this work very much. My wife and I recently toured Missouri with this book as our primary tour guide. Due to the government shut-down and the closure of all the National Military Parks such as Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge we were able to see many state and locally maintained sites that would have been unavailable to us had we not had a copy of "Friend and Foe Alike" at our disposal.
