I loved the morning of the story with hints of other great horror characters from great literature. The story was crisp and believable. A great mix of a little steampunk, SciFi, and period spy genre. Loved it. Would definitely read more when and if it comes.
This isan amazing series. And with the boxed set you get all4 eBooks for one great price.Book 1:This book is like a cross between a William Gibson Novel, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and the Matrix. Modo is a secret agent; he was raised almost from birth by Mr. Socrates who is a member of a secret agency within, or on top of, the British Government. Their goal is to protect all things British and to make the world in its own image. But unlike Neo's ability to shape his reality, Modo can shape himself. He can change his looks and appearance and Mr. Socrates believes this gift will make him an excellent agent. Therefore he invests years in his upbringing and training in all the skills he will require. The story is classed as SteamPunk. It takes a historic setting, time and place and adds in technology they did not have at the time. Kind of an alternate reality storyline. Once the adventure begins the story is a race to the climax. Modo meets another agent of Socrates, a beautiful young woman named Octavia Milkweed and together they must discover the truth around missing children - a missing grandson of the queen and strange stories of feral children with incredible strength, and bolts coming out of their shoulders. Their enemies are a mysterious Clockwork Guild and their mad scientist Dr. Hyde. This story was great fun to read. After the first few chapters about Modo's upbringing, it races through to a great battle. The story is compelling and Modo, with his abilities and his difficulties, is a charming protagonist. It is another great novel by Governor General Award-winning Canadian author, Arthur Slade. We can only hope it will be the first in a series, for upon finishing the book you are left wanting more and wondering what will happen between Modo and Octavia.Book 2:When I finished book I in this series, The Hunchback Assignments, I was itching for a second book. This book exceeded expectations, and still left me wanting a third book. Arthur Slade has created an amazing new series in the steam punk style. Set in a Victorian Era but with technology they never had. A convincing alternate reality, that engrosses the reader and draws them into the possibilities of the world that has been created. In this book Modo and Octavia are paired up again to investigate something troubling to the British Empire. Masquerading as Husband and Wife they travel to America, to find a missing British agent and stumble upon some French agents and their plans. They must discover who or what has been sinking ships in the north Atlantic. Modo meets a beautiful French agent named Colette and they end up needing to partner up after both being captured by a new player on the board, a sort of Queen. There is also the reappearance of the Clockwork Guild and it looks like we haven't seen the end of them yet. This book is incredibly well written. While reading it, you become completely engrossed in the book and will find yourself drawn into their world and rooting for Modo during his adventure. Slade has created a wonderful world with characters you find yourself enamored of, and rooting for.Book 3:Arthur Slade has another smash hit on his hands. In this amazing novel we are reunited with Modo, Octavia, and Mr. Socrates, and Tharpa joins the expedition this time around. And of course, it features our favorite mechanical hand villain, Miss Hakkandottir. This time the steampunk adventure takes us to the colonies once again as we immerse ourselves in the Victorian World with a technological twist. Now the adventure heads to the Australian Outback and a rumored Egyptian pyramid in the middle of the Jungle. Filled with a mix of Victorian sense and sensibility, and the steampunk cutting-edge technology, the story takes us into an alternate past. This story is wonderfully written with greater character development and depth than the earlier two books. Slade is a master storyteller and as he draws us into this world and the complex relationship between two spies serving their country, Modo and Octavia both explore new feelings and expectations. This adventure is to see and find a legendary God Face, an ancient relic supposed to turn an enemy arm upon itself. But with poisonous mechanical falcons, an assassin, and Modo and company always seeming one step behind, can they pull it together and achieve another victory for England and the Crown? This book was another amazing read by an incredible Canadian author. Arthur Slade has been in my top ten reads almost every quarter and every year for a few years running. This book was no exception. I had heard a rumour that this book 3 was to be the last, but now Arthur Slade has confirmed at least a 4th book, breaking with his tradition of only doing trilogys for series, such as Northern Fights and his Canadian Chills. I already anticipate the next, and if you have not read them, read the Hunchback Assignments. They are exceptional works of fiction!Book 4:I just finished this book and the series. Six years after finishing book 3 in the series. It is not because I did not like it. In fact, the opposite. I loved this series, and the characters. Coming back to this series and reading about Modo and Octavia again was like visiting friends whom I had not seen in years. I held off reading this book because I did not want the adventure to end. In the interim between reading the first three and now, Arthur Slade has published this series internationally, and it has been rebranded from The Hunchback Assignments to Modo: Mission Clockwork. Both titles work for the series. And I can see pros and cons of both. Though I do really like the covers from the rebranded books. This series has won numerous awards and for good reasons. Written for a younger audience it holds up incredibly well for older audiences. In fact, I consider the conclusion of this series much more satisfying than the Hunger Games, with each book in that series I liked it a little less. Whereas with Modo every new adventure I appreciated the character, the stories, and the writing more. This series has traversed the globe and even to the depths of the oceans. But in this volume, we encounter some new characters, are reintroduced to a few from previous books. This book is a wonderful mix of action, adventure, spy craft, and steampunk. The book begins with Modo sort of being on the outs with Mr.Socrates. They are hiding out in Montreal, and most of the Permanent Association, that had been formed to preserve Britannia has for the most part been broken. There are few pockets left operating under separate authority. When word comes that the Clockwork Guild is looking for Modo's parents. There are journeys from Canada to France and back. Then across to the west coast of North America. Surprise might be the only thing that Mr. Socrates and his crew have going for them, but will it be enough to overcome this organization that has stayed one step ahead of them through all these adventures? This story is an excellent read. The book and the whole series is amazing. And my children are just getting old enough that I plan on starting to reread these books with my oldest two. In some ways, these books are like a cross between Johnny Quest and a steam punk Mission Impossible. These stories are masterfully written and will draw readers of all ages in and keep their attention. Once you start reading one of these books you really do not want to put it down.A wonderful book and series, give them a try I am sure you will enjoy them immensely.
No having to wait, 4 books from the same series, ready to be consumed. Modo starts his life as an oddity to be stared at, but Mr. Socrates sees him as something more, and saves him from a life of pointing and whispers (because his looks are far from normal). Although you can't say that Modo has an ordinary childhood, but his unusual childhood might stand him in good stead for the adventures he has as he gets older, and to get the most out of his special talent he was born with. I enjoyed this SteamPunk series where the Modo's group vs the Clockwork Guild (with their mad scientist Dr. Hyde). Who will end up winning the battle between them? And what will the cost be?I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.
I am writing this review for the collection, although I got the books one at a time. This would be easier this way, in that you would be able to start the next as you finish one. I'm only giving 4 stars as I enjoyed 2 stories more than the other 2, but I did enjoy the whole series. They are somewhat like some classics, but with a nice twist. Especially on the second book, I got to a point where I just had to finish - couldn't put it down. I would recommend this series for a nice escape.
Arthur Slade's Mission Clockwork series follows one of my favorite characters in fiction - Modo, the "shape shifting" teenage spy - on four adventures to thwart the diabolical Clockwork Guild. With his fellow spies Modo battles a steampunk giant fueled by a most curious enslavement, travels over the ocean to put a stop to a "sea monster", journeys to the jungles of Australia to learn the secrets of out-of-place Egyptian ruins, and faces the enemy on an island crawling with mad science experiments. What great adventures! You've gotta read them!
One of the best stories I've ever read, you must read this series. Can we have some more Mr. Slade?
A different outlook gives hope for humanity. No matter how bad the odds may be, love will always shine through and bring hope to our hearts!
I really enjoyed the boxes set. It had me on the edge of my seat through every episode!I will enjoy the next set of books.
